Expert Tips
- Adjust sugar according to your taste. I used milk bread so added 1 teaspoon sugar and 1 teaspoon honey which was perfect.
- You can replace white sugar with demerara sugar too.
- Use nonstick pan for toasting which avoids sticking.
- While dipping the bread slices, just dip it well so that its coated well on both sides.
- You can serve it with maple syrup, dates syrup or a dash of honey o just have it plain too.
- I usually don’t add vanilla essence as I love the plain egg flavor but its your preference.
- There are a lot of variations you can give to this simple bread toast – add orange zest, lemon zest for a different flavour.
- You can make this as savory version by replacing sugar, honey with salt and pepper powder.
- If you don’t have custard powder then add corn flour and vanilla essence which will give the same flavor.
- While dipping the bread don’t leave it for more time , just a fraction of second for each side of the bread else the bread slices would become mushy and stick to the pan.
- Preferably use a nonstick dosa tawa so that it doesn’t stick.
Serving and Storage
French Toast should be served hot and fresh. I would not recommend storing as it takes just 10 minutes to make it.

I’ve heard people use Mayonnaise instead of Egg, some people even using Butter instead. Are they viable substitutes or is Egg the best choice when making French Toast?
