Pudalangai Kootu is one of the recipes that I wanted to post for a long time, somehow it gets missed every time I make it. Either I forget to click the stepwise or the weather is bad and finally few weeks back I managed to cook and click it as well, here is the recipe for you. Do try and enjoy!

About Pudalangai Kootu
Pudalangai Kootu is a tasty curry made using snake gourd, lentils, spices and herbs. It is a side dish but can be used as a main dish for rice too. Rice with kootu and papad is my favorite combination so is mittu so I always make kootu varieties often.
Kootu can be made with many vegetables including carrot, chow chow, beans, keerai etc. It is healthy, wholesome and tasty too. Amma makes the best kootu and I love it with rice and curd rice too.
Pudalangai Kootu Ingredients
- Snake gourd – Snake gourd also called pudalangai in tamil. Choose fresh tender ones, clean rinse well and use it.
- Grinding – Coconut along with cumin seeds and green chili is grind to a paste.
- Tempering – A tempering is made using oil, mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves and hing.

How to make Pudalangai Kootu Step by Step
1.First clean the veggie and chop into pieces. Then pressure cook dal along with salt, with enough water and turmeric powder until mushy. Mash it up with a ladle, set aside. Cook the veggie with enough water until soft then add little turmeric powder mix well.
2.Add cooked dal and let it boil for few mins. Grind the ingredients listed under ‘to grind to a fine paste.
3.When dal is nicely blended with the veggie with no raw smell, then add the coconut paste give a quick stir. Add required salt. Let it boil for 3-5 minutes until raw smell of coconut paste leaves. Add little water it starts thickening.
4.Heat oil in a pan add the items listed under ‘to temper’ and add this tempering to the kootu , give a quick mix and switch off.
Expert Tips
- You can even pressure cook snakegourd but be careful not to mush the veggie.
- Seasoning at the last stage gives a great flavour to the kootu.
Serving and Storage
You can serve this as accompaniment for rice. Kootu keeps well in fridge for 2 days.

Ingredients
- 2 cups pudalangai / snake gourd chopped
- 1/4 cup toor dal
- 1 pinch turmeric powder
- salt to taste
To Grind :
- 3 tablespoon coconut
- 1 teaspoon jeera
- 1 green chilli
To Temper:
- 2 teaspoon oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon urad dal
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 1 pinch hing

Yes you can but usually we add toor dal for this kootu

Akka can I replace bottle gourd instead of snake gourd..?? Or should i go with different recipes,.. If so post me link for bottle gourd I could not find one..
