I have heard and read a lot of health benefits of kollu(horsegram) so have started to include horse gram also known as kollu in our regular menu. Kollu Rasam is so flavorful and a comforting combo with hot rice. You can pair it with kollu sundal or any simple stir fried poriyal.

About Kollu Rasam
Kollu Rasam is made using kollu, tomato, tamarind extract, pepper, garlic cumin seeds, tempering herbs and spices. Kollu Rasam Recipe is easy and quick to make. Kollu slows ageing, controls sugar levels, promotes weight loss & more.
I love the taste of kollu by itself but I made sundal with the remaining kollu as hubby likes sundal. The rasam is very flavorful with freshly crushed garlic and pepper. Suits best for steamed rice. It is called horse gram in english and kollu in tamil.

Kollu Rasam Ingredients
- Kollu – Kollu also known as horse gram is used here. You can use the cooked water for rasam and the kollu for making sundal
- Tamarind – Pick the speck and seeds and discard them before soaking.
- Tomato – Tomatoes add a tangy taste and flavor to rasam.
- Cumin seeds, Pepper – Cumin and pepper forms the base for any rasam and greatly helps in digestion.
- Tempering – A basic tempering is made using mustard seeds, red chilies, hing and curry leaves.
- Garlic – Garlic gives a great flavor to rasam. Crushing and adding enhances the taste.
- Coriander leaves – Rasam is incomplete without coriander leaves, so use generously.
How to make Kollu Rasam Step by Step
1.Soak kollu(horsegram) overnight with enough water. Pressure cook with 1 and 1/2 cups of water for 5 whistles. Drain the water with a handful of kollu, set it aside. Reserve the remaining kollu for making sundal.
2.Crush garlic, pepper and jeera coarsely using a hand mortar and pestle, set aside. In a pan add oil and temper the items listed under ‘to temper’
3.Then add the crushed garlic-pepper-jeera mixture and sauté for a minute. Then add required salt, hing and turmeric powder. Add tomatoes and sauté till raw smell leaves.
4.Mash the kollu with the drained water once and then add it to the tempered items. Add tamarind paste and allow it for a frothy boil. Then add chopped coriander leaves and switch it off.
Kollu Rasam is ready!
Expert Tips
- We can also add rasam powder but I prefer freshly crushed garlic jeera and pepper.
- Soaking kollu is a must so that it gets cooked soft.
- You can use cooked water for making rasam, soup and cooked kollu for making sundal or any stir fried dish.
Serving and Storage
Kollu Rasam can be served with rice, roti etc. This rasam keeps well in fridge for 2 days, reheat and serve it.

Ingredients
- 1/4 cup kollu / horse gram
- 1 small sized tomato roughly chopped

- 2 teaspoon coriander leaves finely chopped

To Temper:
- 1/2 teaspoon Mustard seeds

Kollu is good for reducing weight and to shed cholesterol, however generates lot of heat to body if consumed regularly. Once or twice in a week would be okay and would be delicious as well.
