So it is always good to make homemade porridge mixes and porridge. Find below a collection of porridge recipes that you can feed fro your babies, toddlers and kids.
Health Mix Porridge
Health Mix Porridge is an easy to make homemade baby food made by blending health mix with honey, spices and flavors. Health Mix Porridge is good for 6+ months babies and is instant to make in busy schedule & travel. Check out the health mix recipe for kids above 1 year. This porridge mix keeps well for about 1 month in room temperature and for about 6 months in fridge.
Ingredients for Health Mix
- 1.5 cups rice
- 1 cup green gram dal
- 1 cup roasted gram dal
- 1 cup whole black urad dal with skin
- 1 cup masoor dal
- 1 cup moong dal
- 1 cup broken wheat
- 1/2 cup sago
- 1/2 cup cashew
- 1/2 cup badam
For making savory porridge
- 2 tablespoon health mix powder
- 1 cup water
- 1/8 teaspoon roasted jeera powder
For making sweet porridge
- 2 tablespoon health mix powder
- 1 cup water
- 2 teaspoon jaggery syrup
- 1/2 teaspoon ghee
- 1/8 teaspoon cardamom powder
- For making health mix : Get ready with all your ingredients. Rinse green gram dal and black urad dal, drain water and start roasting in a thick bottomed pan.
- Roast until golden brown. Transfer to a plate.Rinse masoor dal and moong dal. Drain water.
- Transfer to a pan and start roasting. Roast until golden brown. Transfer to a plate.
- Rinse rice. Drain water. Roast until golden.
- It should resemble more or like puffed rice. Transfer to a plate. Dry roast sago until golden.
- Transfer to a plate. Dry roast broken wheat until golden.
- Transfer to a plate. Dry roast gram dal until golden brown.
- Transfer to a plate. Now roast cashew and badam until brown spots appear here and there.
- Cool the roasted ingredients completely. Mix it well. Now transfer to a mixer jar in batches.
- Grind to a fine powder. Sieve it well. Collect the scrap and add it to next batch for grinding. Now the health mix powder is ready.
- For making savory porridge : Take health mix powder in a sauce pan. Add water. Whisk it well.
- Add jeera powder and start cooking. Cook until the mixture turns thick.
- Cook until glossy.It should coat the ladle as shown and will be like pudding in consistency. Switch off and serve warm.
- For making sweet porridge : Take health mix powder in a sauce pan. Add water. Whisk it well.
- Cook until slightly thick then add jaggery syrup, ghee.
- Then add cardamom powder and cook in low flame for 10 mins.
- Cook until thick and glossy. It should coat the ladle and will be in pudding consistency. Switch off.
- For making savory porridge : Take health mix powder in a sauce pan. Add water. Whisk it well.
Sooji Porridge
Sooji Porridge is an instant, mild and easily digestible porridge that you can feed for babies after 6 months. Sooji Porridge is made by simmering roasted rava and blend with jaggery syrup & milk to a porridge consistency.
Ingredients
- 1/8 cup fine sooji / rava ~2 tablespoon
- 1 teaspoon melted ghee
- 1/2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon jaggery syrup
- 2 to 3 tablespoon milk boiled and warm
Method
- In a pan add ghee then add sooji and roast it in low flame.
- Roast until its fragrant but do not let it change the color. Remove roasted sooji from flame and set aside.Now add 1/2 cup water in the same pan and let it boil.
- When it starts bubbling up,simmer the flame and add roasted sooji.Keep stirring and let it cook in low flame.
- When it gets thick and all the water is absorbed switch off and close with lid. Do not disturb for 10mins.After 10 mins when you open and see it will be thickish.
- Now add jaggery syrup and milk.
- Mix well to get the porridge consistency.
Whole Wheat Milk Porridge
Whole Wheat Milk Porridge for Babies is a easy, home made baby food made by extracting the wheat milk and thickening it by heating. How to make Whole wheat milk porridge at home featured in this recipe. Ideal for babies starting from 4 months.
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup whole wheat
- 1 cup water
- 1 teaspoon sweetener or honey
- 1/4 teaspoon ghee
Method
- Soak whole wheat overnight.Rinse it well and drain water.
- Transfer the wheat grains to a mixer jar.Add water.
- Grind it , add more water if needed.Transfer to a strainer.
- Press it well with a spoon to extract milk which will be thick.Again do this process to extract 2nd thin milk.Collect the extracted milk in a bowl.
- Now transfer it to a pan.Start cooking in low flame, it will start to thicken and gives a shine.It will take atleast 5-7mins in low flame.
- Add ghee and keep cooking till its thick and coats the laddle.At this stage add any sweetner of your choice.
- Cook for 3-5 mins then switch off. Feed warm along with few drops of ghee or as such.
Broken Wheat Porridge
Broken Wheat Porridge is a tasty, healthy baby food made by cooking broken wheat and blending it with nuts. Broken Wheat Porridge is a good for 8+ months babies and is filling too.
Ingredients
- 1/8 cup broken wheat
- 1 cup water
- 3 nos almonds
- 5 nos raisins
- 1 teaspoon ghee
For babies after 1 year
- 2 tablespoon milk boiled
- 2 teaspoon jaggery syrup
- Soak almonds in hot water for 30 mins, then peel of the skin.Measure broken wheat.
- Measure and take broken wheat in a bowl, add water.Rinse it well.
- Soak in water for atleast 30mins.Rinse again, drain water.In a pressure cooker add broekn wheat along with almonds and raisins.
- Add water, pressure cook for 5 whistles in low flame.Let the pressure release by itself.Cool down completely.
- Transfer to mixer jar along with the water and grind to a smooth puree.I blended it a bit coarse as gugu likes it that way as he has already crossed the baby mode 🙂 You can feed this for babies below 1 year as such.
- For babies after 1 year : Take this puree in a sauce pan.Add milk to it.Cook for 2 mins.
- Then add jaggery syrup,ghee cook for a minute and switch off.
Raw Banana Porridge
Raw Banana Porridge for Babies is a baby food made by cooking raw banana powder with cane sugar. Ideal for babies starting from 6 months. This porridge mix keeps well for about 3 weeks in room temperature and for about 2 months in fridge.
To make Raw Banana Mix
- 3 raw nendran banana
To prepare Raw Banana Porridge
- 2 teaspoon raw banana porridge mix heaped
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 teaspoon unrefined cane sugar
Method
- To make Raw Banana Porridge Mix : Take the raw bananas,trim both the edges.Then slit it in the rims then peel off the skin.
- Peel off the skin from all the 3 bananas and keep it ready.Using a slicer slice it as thin as possible.
- See how thin it is,the thinner the slices it will get dried up quickly.Let it get dried up in hot sun.
- It took 2 days to get dried up fully.Transfer it to a mixer, powder it fine.
- Use a fine sieve to sieve it.Discard the coarse seed part.Cool down then store in a clean airtight container.
- To make Raw Banana Porridge : Take cane sugar in a bowl,add water preferable hot water.
- Mix well,break the lumps and Set aside.Take porridge mix in a sauce pan, add water.
- Whisk it well.Now strain cane sugar mixture to remove impurities.
- Whisk it well.Till this stage do it off the stove.Now heat it up an cook in low flame.It will start to thicken as you can see.
- Cook in low flame till it reaches a thick porridge consistency,it should coat the laddle.At this stage switch off. Serve warm.
Pear Oats Porridge
Pear Oats Porridge for Babies is a baby food made by cooking pear with rolled oats and then grind it to form a porridge. Ideal for babies starting from 6 months.
Ingredients
- 1 small pear
- 1 tablespoon rolled oats heaped
- 1 cup water
Method
- Wash the pear cut into half.Remove the seed and skin.
- Cut them into small cubes roughly.Rinse it once then take it in a sauce pan,add oats to it.
- Add water to it.Heat it up, cook covered in low medium flame.
- Cook for 4-7mins or until pear becomes soft.Switch off and cool down.Transfer to a mixer jar.
- Puree it smooth or coarse according to your preference.Mix and feed.
Rice Dal Khichdi
Rice dal khichdi mix for babies is a baby food used for making porridge for babies. This is also known as Homemade Rice Dal Porridge or Cereal commonly. Ideal for babies starting from 6 months. This porridge mix keeps well for about 2 weeks in room temperature and for about 1 month in fridge.
Ingredients
To make Rice Dal Khichdi Mix
- 1 cup cooking rice
- 1/2 cup split yellow moong dal
- 1 teaspoon jeera
- 1/4 teaspoon hing
To prepare Rice Dal Khichdi
- 2 tablespoon khichdi mix
- 3/4 cup water
- 1/8 teaspoon ghee
- 1 small carrot
- Measure rice and dal.Take rice first,rinse it well atleast 2-3 times then drain water.
- Transfer to a pan and start roasting.In few mins you can see it moisture free and start drying up.
- Keep roasting in low flame until it looks puffy and white.You can see the close look of the rice when its done.Switch off at this stage.
- Next take dal,rinse it well atleast 2-3 times then drain water.
- Transfer to a pan and start roasting.In few mins you can see it moisture free and start drying up.Roast till golden brown.
- Let it cool down.Dry roast jeera till slightly browned.Add hing and roast for a minute.
- Switch off,transfer it to rice dal and Let it cool down.Now transfer this to a mixer jar.
- Grind to a slightly coarse mixture.Sieve using a medium holed siever.Cool down and then store in airtight container. Keeps well atleast for 2-3 months.
- Wash carrot well.Trim both the edges,peel off the skin and chop into small pieces.
- Add water and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.You can open cook in a vessel too.Add salt if you are adding.
- Boil water, add cereal mix and whisk it well to avoid lumps.
- Cook in low flame.It will become thick.Add ghee and keep cooking.Add salt if you are adding.
- Cook till it comes together like a porridge.You can see the consistency here.
- It will thick, taste and chek whether the mixture is soft.If its still not cooked add little more water and cook until soft.Once cooked,Set aside to cool.Take cooked carrots in a mixer and puree it with little water.
- Add the khichdi to the serving bowl, add carrot puree and mix well.Add little ghee if desired.
Millet Khichdi
Millet khichdi mix for babies is a millet based baby food used for making porridge for babies. Ideal for babies starting from 8 months. This porridge mix keeps well for about 2 weeks in room temperature and for about 1 month in fridge.
Ingredients
1.5 cup thinai foxtail millet
1/4 cup varagu kodo millet
1/4 cup paasi paruppu split yellow moong dal
1 teaspoon jeera heaped
1/4 teaspoon hing
For making porridge:
1.5 tablespoon porridge mix heaped
3/4 cup water
1/4 teaspoon ghee
- Measure all your ingredients and get ready.Rinse the millets, first varagu,thinai.
- Then moong dal,rinse them well drain water and let it dry under sun for an hour.Now start roasting, I started with thinai.
- Roast until golden brown, the millet will become crisp thats the right stage,Switch off and let it to cool.Then add varagu.
- Dry roast till golden,set aside to cool.Finally add moong dal roast until golden brown.Set aside to cool.
- Then add jeera roast until slightly browned,then add hing roast for 2 seconds.Switch off.
- Set aside to cool for sometime, then transfer to a mixer and grind it to a semi fine powder.It will be slightly coarse that you can feel the texture while touching.Allow it to cool down for few mins then store.
- To make the porridge : Take porridge mix powder in a sauce pan,add water.Whisk well.Cook in low flame.
- Keep cooking in low flame until it starts to thicken.
- It will become thick in a while,more like this a thick sauce.At this stage add ghee and switch off. Serve warm.
Expert Tips
- You can skip sweetener and feed it as such too if you are feeding fro babies below 1 year as it is suggested to start with salt or sugar only after 1 year.
- Cook in low flame, make sure it gets cooked well.
- Porridge gets thick after cooling down so switch off accordingly and always feed it warm.
- As we are making powder using raw banana, cook in sim for more time to avoid stomach upset.
- For sweetener, you can either add palm sugar or jaggery syrup too. You can even add karupatti (palm jaggery) syrup.
- While roasting, roast it low flame and do not let it brown.
- I used normal cooking rice we use, you can try with any other rice variety too.
- But always consult your pediatrician before introducing any new food.
- Add more water as it takes sometime for the millets to cook as with rice.
