About Simple Syrup
Simple Syrup is sugar dissolved in water and boiled to form liquefied sugar syrup. Simple Syrup or Sugar is a key ingredient for making cock tails, mock tails and other beverages. However you can use this simple syrup for making cakes, sweets and desserts too.
Simple Syrup is nothing but sugar syrup in a slightly thick consistency. This Simple Syrup is very easy and quick to make. You can store this in fridge for a at least 2-3 weeks.
Sugar acts as a natural preservative for many dishes so when made into syrup it lasts long and comes handy when we need it. You just need 2 ingredients and 10 minutes to make this simple syrup.
Simple Syrup dissolves easily in many liquids including beverages so very handy and useful. There are many variations to this simple syrup – make it with cane sugar or brown sugar or demerara sugar etc. You can even infuse herbs like rosemary thyme or add essence like vanilla, rose, cardamom etc.
Simple Syrup Ratio
Basic simple syrup consists of equal amounts of sugar and water. The ratio of sugar syrup is 1 part water : 1 part sugar. I have used white sugar here but have tried with brown sugar and cane sugar too. Make sure to keep the ratio same for all sugar. If you are a first timer then first try with granulated white sugar then try with different sugars.

Simple Syrup – 2 ways
I have shared 2 ways in which simple syrup can be prepared. For both the preparations the measures are the same 1 part water : 1 part sugar.
- White Granulated Sugar – I have use white granulated sugar which is the basic traditional simple syrup.
- Brown Sugar – Alternate to white sugar you can use brown sugar or cane sugar too.
Flavored Simple Syrup
- Herbs / Spices – You can use fresh herbs or spices as per your choice like rosemary, cardamom, thyme etc.
- Flavors – You can add vanilla, butterscotch, strawberry, orange essence to this simple syrup and make it flavored.
Types of Sugar used
You can use white granulated sugar or demerara sugar or brown sugar or even vane sugar.
Simple Syrup Ingredients
- Water – Use clear sparkling water at room temperature.
- Sugar – Use white granulated sugar for making basic traditional simple syrup. However you can replace it with brown sugar or demerara sugar or cane sugar.
How to make Simple Syrup
1.Add 1 cup water to a sauce pan along with 1 cup sugar and let it to boil.
2.Mix it well until sugar dissolves completely.
3.Boil for 3-5 minutes and switch off. No consistency needs to be checked.
4.Strain using a metal strainer to remove impurities if any. Cool down completely until it comes to room temperature.
5.Store in a clean dry bottle.
6.Store in fridge.
Store in fridge and use when needed.
Simple Syrup using brown sugar
Simple Syrup can be made using white sugar or brown sugar.
1.To a sauce pan – add 1 cup cane sugar or brown sugar.
2.Add 1 cup water to it. Whisk it well until sugar dissolves completely.
3.Boil for 3-5 minutes. No consistency needs to be checked.
4.Switch off.
5.Strain and store the syrup in a clean dry bottle.
Expert Tips
- Do not make the syrup too thick then after a day or so it will start to crystallize.
- Keep in mind it should be slightly sticky that’s it.You can use white sugar or cane sugar both need the same mesurements.
- Sugar Syrup can also be flavored with essence of rose, vanilla, blueberry or any flavor of your choice.
Storage
Store in fridge and it keeps well for about 2-3 weeks.
