Chow Chow Kootu Recipe | Chayote Kootu Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 medium sizedchow chow cut into small cubes
  • 2 tablespoon toor dal
  • 1 medium sized sized big onion chopped finely
  • a generous pinch turmeric powder
  • salt to taste

To grind:

  • 2 tablespoon coconut grated
  • 1 teaspoon jeera / cumin seeds

To temper:

  • 2 teaspoon oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon urad dal
  • a generous pinch hing / perungayam
  • 10 curry leaves
  • 1 green chilli slitted

Instructions

  • Peel the skin of the vegetable and chop them finely. Grind coconut and cumin seeds to a coarse paste and set aside. Pressure cook toor dal, turmeric, water until mushy and soft. Mash it well with a ladle and set aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds let it splutter then add urad dal, green chilies, hing and curry leaves. Then add onion and sauté till onion shrinks. Add chow chow along with turmeric powder, sauté for 2 minutes until raw smell leaves
  • Then add cooked dal and required water cook covered until the veggie becomes soft, add required salt. Allow it to boil and keep stirring in between.
  • Then add the coconut paste and allow it to boil till it becomes thick. Switch off. Chow chow kootu is ready!
  • Serve hot with rice!

Notes

  • Add the coconut paste only after the veggie is cooked.
  • The curry will thicken with time so switch it off accordingly.
  • You can also replace toor dal with chana dal.
